$8.4 Million Federal Formula Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Grant Announced in Texas

Applications for the $8.4 million in Perkins Vocational Education grants in the state of Texas are due October 16, 2006 for 2006-07 funds. Funds provided under Perkins grants are directed at developing the academic, vocational and technical skills of students in high schools, community colleges, and regional technical centers and are focused on improving career-technical education programs. Additionally, the grant calls for providing access to these programs for students with special needs.
The purpose of the Perkins program includes:
 •  Providing career guidance and academic counseling to students participating in career and technical education (CTE)
 •  Providing work-related experience such as internships for students
 •  Providing programs for students with special needs
 •  Supporting local education and business partnerships
 •  Support for CTE student organizations and mentoring and support services for students
 •  Leasing, purchasing, upgrading or adapting equipment
 •  Professional development and teacher preparation programs for individuals interesting in becoming CTE teachers
 •  Support for family and consumer science programs
 •  Helping participating students find jobs

To receive funds, institutions must operate a vocational and technical education program that meets several criteria, including the integration of technology, the inclusion of professional development for teachers, and the linkage of secondary and postsecondary vocational and technical education programs.
