Latest College Technology Statistics
For each of the past nine years, MDR has conducted a college technology survey to report on high-tech trends in U.S. colleges and universities. The big story this year involves spending increases, which are estimated to rise 35% over last year’s levels. Those details and other highlights include:
Spending
- Projected spending will reach nearly $7 billion, with over half going toward hardware purchases.
- Hardware is the largest growth category at $3.4 billion, an increase of 41% over prior year.
- Software and outside services each account for 23% of spending.
- Private institution spending is projected to increase 26% compared with last year; public institutions are expected to spend 20% more than they did in 2004-2005.
Networks, Computers, Internet Access, and Distance Learning
- 86% of the networks on U.S. colleges and university campuses are wireless.
- Dell continues to be the computer brand of choice with 64% market share, followed by Gateway at 13%.
- Internet access is widespread on campuses, most prevalent in computer labs (in 95% of colleges) and in libraries (92%). Classrooms, student centers, and dorms are additional popular locations.
- 68% of all campuses provide distance learning programs.
