- The balance was distributed as follows:
- Over $2.6 billion was spent on adding new space to existing buildings.
- More than $2 billion was used for renovations.
2006 Projections
- $14.4 billion of college construction is expected to be finished this year. Of that:
- Over $10 billion (70.5%) will go to new buildings.
- $2.5 billion is expected to be spent on renovations and upgrades.
- $1.7 billion will be used to add space to existing structures.
- It’s been estimated that college construction “starts” in 2006 will be under $14 billion. But this number, seemingly, has been historically underreported.
Spending by Region*
- The states in Region 11 (Arizona, California, Hawaii, and Nevada) were the biggest spenders, putting nearly $2 billion worth of construction in place—13.6% of the total college construction expenditures. More than 80% ($1.6 billion) of the construction dollars in this region were spent on new buildings.
- Region 9 (Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas) was second in overall spending with $1.8 billion. Nearly $1.4 billion was used for new buildings.
- The only northeastern states to be among the top five regions for spending were those in Region 2 (New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania) with $1.75 billion.
- Region 4 (Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee) and Region 6 (Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio) spent $1.64 billion and $1.56 billion, respectively.
*The publication divides the country into 12 construction regions, East to West.
